Army guards Canal Zone as riots flare in Panama City

Army May Get New Lightweight Weapons From Allies

The Australian Government eyed new light section support weapons from Belgium America and Canada for the Army announced by Minister Cramer. Proposals include American M60 Belgian MAGS and Canadian FNC 2 rifles all in 7.62 mm NATO with lighter high explosive hand grenades and air cooled alloy components.

Violent Hailstorm Strikes Sydney Area

A severe hailstorm battered Sydney causing roof damage and power concerns. A lightning strike toppled a light pole near Malabar Public School narrowly missing a classroom. Temperatures plunged from 88.6 and rainfall exceeded one inch in two hours as crews halted a Wyong race meeting and Mascot airport closed. Police reported multiple nonfatal accidents as thousands sought cover. The Weather Bureau had predicted little rain.
