Sydney reports a positive shift as a national conference on stevedoring issues ends with a vote to form a working party. The meeting, chaired by Labour Minister W McMahon and urged by ACTU President Monk, saw all sides present their views and agree on next steps.
The Australia wide talks open in Sydney after months of waterfront trouble. A working party will study issues, gather background information and report back, with another full conference planned. Mr. McMahon noted frank discussions and optimism over progress despite long delays. The dispute centers on penal clauses and costs to workers and shipowners amid possible nationwide strike if penalties persist.
Reports say a 15 hour cyclone near Chittagong on the Bay of Bengal killed more than five hundred people. Chittagong Nassrt and Noaktali were submerged as winds reached up to 100 miles per hour. Ayub Khan announced a relief grant of one million rupees as communications fell and thousands were left homeless.
Malaya signals cooperation with Indonesia as Prime Minister reads a report that Soekarno may not join the Commonwealth. Five men including a former mayor were convicted of defrauding the Sister Kenny Foundation of about seven million dollars in charity gifts. The 10 week trial found they concealed donations while evidence showed they collected around twenty million dollars in gifts.
Officials at Fairbairn and astronomers Dr Bart Bok and Dr Golinosy report a mysterious orange red flash crossing the sky near Canberra after dusk. Civil aviation authorities note the craft was not an aircraft due to its flashing lights, while RAAF later confirms a Vampire jet with a large amber recognition light flew over at high altitude around 420 mph.
Christopher Orde Powlett, son of Lord Bolton and descendant of the fifth Marquess of Winchester, seeks permission from the Ministry to dig at Basing House in Hampshire for buried gold reputed from the 1645 siege. The 3 million pound haul reportedly includes melted coins, a solid gold table, and a calf statue weighing about six tons.

The haul was hidden in several cellophane wrapped packs on a tape through two decks. Sibigo operates among Australian Singapore Malayan and Thailand ports.
The deal runs to June 1967 with annual deliveries of 350 000 to 450 000 tons and Japan to receive about a third of its needs from Australia. Australia agrees to an additional 330 000 tons before June 1964 under an existing contract. The three year agreement was negotiated by BR G Jackson for Queensland bodies. Dr J Vernon of CSR says the pact secures a stable Japanese market for roughly one third of Australian sugar exports.
A motor cyclist, Eino Laake sonem, 50, of Ainslie Hospital, was admitted with a fractured left leg after a fall in Fyshwick yesterday afternoon. Jan Seczawa of Turner remained in serious condition with skull injuries and facial lacerations after a car hit a telegraph pole at Boldrewood and Kingsley Streets. Police reported 15 accidents yesterday to 11 p.m., none serious.
Melbourne dispatch reports William Shore 41 dies of cancer in Traralgon Hospital. His widowed mother Mary Shore 63 is flown to Australia under a £10 immigration plan after a police escort and a London to Edinburgh connection. Australia House says two year residency required.
