Isolated violence mars strike failure near Port Elizabeth

In Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth region protests by Africans largely collapsed as a stay at home strike failed. Isolated violence marred the day with two African buses stoned near Kwazakele township on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth.

Strikes and clashes mark South Africa republic inauguration

Police rescued a driver and conductor after they were wounded by armed men as buses were stoned in Kwa Washi and Cato Manor townships. Workers largely ignored the three day strike called by the African National Council to mark South Africa’s republic inauguration amid government victories and internal party tensions.

Townley To Test Mirage II at Paris Air Show

Australian Defence Minister Athol Townley arrived in Paris as guest speaker for the air show. He plans to fly the Mirage III jet fighter and report his findings to the Australian Cabinet. Australia has recently ordered several Mirage III fighters for the Royal Australian Air Force.

Kidnapped Nancy O'Brien Found Safe in Attic

Nancy O'Brien an 11 year old girl was found safe yesterday in an attic of a house in Southport Lancashire. The kidnapper had locked her there and she was discovered unharmed by police.

Ambulance Attends Accident Involving Israeli Ambassador Car

A car owned by Israeli Ambassador Moshe Yuval collided with a truck at Constitution Avenue and Lawson Crescent. Ambassador chauffeur Barry MacFarlane and Victoria Glass were involved. Glass sustained severe head injuries and was admitted to Canberra Community Hospital while MacFarlane received bruises. Weatherall and Smith in the truck suffered no injuries.

No Survivors in Lisbon DC8 Crash Over Atlantic

Portuguese authorities in Lisbon reported no survivors from a KLM DC8 aircraft on charter to ASA that departed Lisbon for Azores en route to Caracas. The four jet airliner carried 48 passengers including 10 children and a crew of 14, with all crew Dutch except a Venezuelan purser and hostess.

Blackout Hits Canberra Region With 14 Minute Dark Spell

A major outage left Queanbeyan and Canberra in darkness for 14 minutes while workers repaired a faulty transformer at the Queanbeyan sub station. Power resumed at 9 42 p m using a duplicate unit. Officials blamed an unknown fault and reported widespread light shutdowns across public venues and services.

No Rise Stated for Land and Lighting Rates

The Minister for the Interior Freesh announced no increase in general land and lighting rates for the year. The general rate is set at 7d and £1 per £1 of assessed land value within the city, with £1 outside the city. Lighting remains 3d per £1 on taxable land within the city.

New South Wales Heart Appeal Reaches £272,500

Sydney reports the New South Wales heart appeal total at £272,500 with about £10,000 from city and country areas received today. Donations by post from metropolitan areas total £5,000 and cheques ranged from £2 to £100. Country area donations today amount to £4,877.
