Whim Creek soars on nickel find amid dull market

Whim Creek Consolidated jumped to $3.90 after announcing a 2.57 per cent nickel strike in Western Australia. Melbourne trading saw early gains to $5.10 before settling up $1.80, while market turnover totaled 26,050 Whim Creek shares. Other mining stocks showed mixed but generally firmer movements with BHP CSR and Poseidon notable in gains.

TV merger proposal approved by RTN shareholders

Northern Rivers Television Ltd shareholders approved by four to one the issue of shares to acquire the entire issued ordinary shares of Richmond Tweed TV. Over 85 percent of RTN shareholders have accepted NRN’s takeover offer as the merger terms were finalised after an Equity Court ruling affected RTN articles. Rhodes Ridge iron ore project study planned in Western Australia

Texas Gulf Sulphur Company said engineering studies will begin early next month to assess the Rhodes Ridge iron ore project 650 miles northeast of Perth. The deposits were first explored under a January 1970 agreement with Hancock and Wright to form a 50 50 joint venture, with over 400 holes outlining an indicated reserve of more than 1 000 million tons at better than 40 percent iron. Tests are under way at the site and in Australia and the United States, with Brown and Root Pty Ltd and Fluor Australia Pty Ltd conducting the studies for Texas Gulf.
