Judges Bar Strikes as Unions Face 12 Month Orders

Mr Justice Dunphy and Mr Justice Joske issued orders forbidding railway stoppages by unions for 12 months with contempt of court penalties up to 500 pounds per day for breaches. The Australian Railways Union and metal trades bodies were named. The hearing opened as ARU leader J Brown urged delay to allow private settlements with the Trades Hall Council Disputes Committee. A special Trades Hall meeting was set for tomorrow to decide on a proposed 24 hour stoppage of state government workers and a request to defer further action for two days. The Commonwealth Arbitration Commission adjourned a no strike clause case involving locomotive enginemen to 9 am Wednesday for more information.
