The capsule AV Aurora 7 and astronaut Carpenter suffered a recovery mission plight after a misfire caused the capsule to land outside the target zone. Rescue craft sped toward Carpenter as medical teams prepared for parachute drops and sea retrieval.
Scott Carpenter reports the Aurora 7 capsule in orbit executing a 180 degree turn and free drift phase. He communicates with ground control and Australian tracking stations about suit cooling, cabin temperature and manual control as the mission proceeds along multiple orbital passes.
Dutch forces launched air and ground actions against Indonesian pockets in West New Guinea as they moved to isolate invaders. About 800 women and children were moved from battle areas along the south coast in preparation for a major offensive. Indonesian claims of victories contrasted with Dutch efforts near Fak Fak Teminabuan and Kaimana. Subandrio urged Papuans to aid Indonesian patriots, while Dutch Defence Minister Visser faced intra-party attacks in The Hague.

Victoria union members invited strikers to Melbourne for a talk on another Clementsen project while carpenters at the printing office held a lunch meeting. They sought equal share of work and to stand down all carpenters together once finished. Management promised a decision by 19 a.m. About 40 carpenters remain at the site as talks about over-award payments with the Master Builders’ Association are set for June 6. The union will not take direct action until after the conference.
Peter Robert Martin, 20, a radio technician with the Department of Civil Aviation from Camden, died after a Land Rover fire following a collision with a car at theIpima Street and Limestone Avenue junction in Braddon. He was trapped during the blaze and later flown to Sydney by RAAF. Police seek witnesses.
Prime Minister Menzies will visit Geneva to see his daughter Heather and Australian embassy staff to seek assurances on Commonwealth trade safeguards as he aims to clarify Australia’s stance in Common Market negotiations. He will later meet President Kennedy in Washington and brief Dr Westerman on Brussels talks.
