Reports from Tokyo say a Japanese war straggler, Private Bunza Minagawa, found alive in Guam jungle sparked joy in Niigata. He was conscripted in 1941 and believed killed in Guam in 1944. his death was officially confirmed in 1957.

Catholic mission in Wewak aims to build a native beef cattle industry in the Sepik district. It has raised 73,000 in Europe to finance the project and seeks 2,500 acres at Timbunke on the Sepik River. Father Francis Heinemans cites 100 head of Austral Illawarra cattle in Wewak and 400 South African rebus om.
