In Geneva the U S chief delegate Dean said disarmament talks were progressing well and a workable nuclear test ban treaty seemed possible. He noted the Soviet Union may advance talks after atmospheric tests and planned to return to Geneva soon.
The Dutch Defence Ministry in The Hague said at least 100 Indonesian paratroopers landed on the south coast of West New Guinea with heavy air cover. The operation is the largest yet against Dutch forces in New Guinea, per Rear Admiral Leendert Reeser reports from Hollandia.
Indonesian paratroopers reportedly landed in two waves near Fak Fak on the New Guinea south coast. Dutch anti aircraft units fired on two bombers as ground forces surrounded earlier invaders. A Hague report said Hollandia radio urged calm amid calls to take the issue to the UN Security Council.
