Congo leaders seek unity as Parliament gathers in Coquithatville amid two week protests. President Kasavuly hopes UN help will restore security and end ten months of confusion and privation for the Can gale people. Parliament recalls Lombist leader Gizenza amid participation disputes with other Congolese leaders.
Congolese armed patrol boats manned by Gendarmes patrol the Congo River between capitals, halting traffic as part of heightened security. Foreign Minister Andre Gromyko arrives in Geneva for the Laos East-West conference, meeting Swiss officials and China’s ambassador to Switzerland.
Pro Communist Pathet Lao leaders say they will join a coalition government in Laos under Prince Souvanna Phoumi. Geneva conference on Laos opens after delays with major powers endorsing a neutral and peaceful Laos. China and U S react to start of talks as Rusk and Gromyka meet amid disputes over seating and verification of a ceasefire.
An administration patrol left Rabaul by trawler to investigate reports of killings in an isolated village on New Britain’s Gavelle Peninsula. The party, expected to travel about 150 miles and be away ten days, is led by Acting District Officer E Emanuel.
The United States urged its NATO allies to join a policy for handling pro Communist Cuba. Secretary of State Rusk told the alliance in Oslo that the West cannot afford any pro Communist influence in Cuba. Officials noted mixed reactions from European capitals and Latin America as the report described a cautious outlook.
Gary Cooper, Hollywood icon and two time Academy Award winner for High Noon and Sergeant York, died after a long battle with cancer. Born May 7 1901 in Helena Montana, he rose from a Montana newspaper job to film stardom and a 45 year career. His wife Veronica daughter Maria and his doctor were with him at the end. Cont. on P. 3.
A party of 100 jungle fighters would enter South Vietnam under President Kennedy’s orders and operate under combat conditions. They would live under fire and fight in swamps and jungles to smoke out and destroy Viet Cong supplies, according to the New York Herald Tribune Despatch.
