The Soviet Union plans in Moscow to cut ministries and move heavy industry outward. Khrushchev announces creation of 82 regional economic councils and mass manpower dispersal to boost efficiency and living standards. Moscow officials and civil servants face uprooting as industry spreads.
Perth reports a government decision to grant Australian import access for Formosan tea. Chinese Ambassador Chan Tat Chu says Formosa will export green and black teas, with black tea touted as superior to Indian and Ceylon varieties and cheaper to market. Large orders have been placed by a Melbourne merchant.
Member for te AG.T. Mr Fraser praises the Government for requesting a review of the Canberra Plan. He says Sir William Holford, from the University of London, will assess the plan and may propose major deviations from Burley Griffin design to fit current living and transport needs.
President Eisenhower promises continued American help to South Vietnam after three talks with President Ngo Dinh Diem. A joint communique warns Communist agitation endangers peace and notes a large North Vietnamese buildup over 30 months. The leaders seek peaceful reunification and stability in the region.
Phillip John Greer a 22 year old of Oaks Estate was shot dead while practice shooting at a bottle on a fence with his brother Bernard and friend Brian O Neill near Cooma Road four miles from Queanbeyan. The shot occurred as Greer rose to avoid a bullet. he died at Queanbeyan Hospital. Police later located his sister in law with her child at Cotter River. no suspicious circumstances were found.
In Buffalo Creek near Myrtleford 175 miles northeast of Melbourne three Italian brothers named Anthony Longo 18 Galeseppi 15 and Robert James 11 drowned when a tractor plunged 15 feet through a wooden bridge deck into the creek. An uncle found the scene after seeing the damaged decking and the tractor with the bodies beneath.
Two of four Britons accused in Cairo of espionage told a court they had just learned the charges after eight months in prison. The defendants James Swinburn, James Zarh, John Thornton Stanley, and Charles Pittuck faced the court as witnesses described alleged letters and defence reports. The judge adjourned the trial to the next day.
Dr Evatt told 2000 Labour supporters in Town Hall that each new nuclear test raises poisonous fallout risks including leukemia and bone cancer. He urged the Commonwealth Government to lead efforts to stop tests, citing scientific and church condemnation and calling for a diplomatic stance toward China and UN admission. He criticised British-Australian policy shifts and bank influence on public life.
