Labour sweeps the New South Wales poll with a clear majority of 18 in the new House. Premier Mair signals retirement while McKell vows to fulfill pledges and push a war effort focused social reforms. New members include Greig Drummoyne and O Halloran Orange with several ministers named as doubtful.
The NSW election results are seen to bolster Federal Labour as Boothby by election looms. Curtin urged NSW voters to back Labour, predicting a national Labour government if NSW and Boothby align. Fadden offered no comment, heading to Wagga for an engagement.
Sydney report says Premier Mair accepts the election result and plans to vacate office as soon as possible to enable Mr McKell to take over. He will consult the Government this week and decide when to resign, stating the people exerted their will in favour of democracy. Bruzner of the Country Party offers support to the incoming government.
Damaged report notes heavy shipping losses in April with damage estimated around £150,000. Fire gutted parts of bond and free stores in a British port, destroying material including imported defence supplies. Fleet totals show 60 ships and 298,089 tons in British stocks. Allied losses reach 189,473 tons across 48 ships.

London reports the Italian press says intervention by the United States is imminent. Rome papers claim weeks or days to action and note Rome contrasts with London plans to back U S military bases in South Africa.
The Navy Minister released an Admiralty communique stating British forces intercepted a German supply ship and a raider, plus a Norwegian tanker, in the Indian Ocean. The ships involved were H.M.A.S. Canberra and H.M.S. Leander under captains Farncomb and Bevan.
German and Norwegian ships face heavy RAF bombing from Mannheim to Ludwigshaven with major fires and widespread destruction. Berlin docks and Hamburg Bremen targets suffer civilian losses as British raids pressure German port cities and industrial zones.

United States aid is urged as essential by Chungking and Chia Kai-shek, while Tokyo urges peace through Washington. A Tokyo commentator forecasts a likely clash with the United States as Japan expands southward. Chungking reports say Japanese bombers struck Chungking in three waves of 27 planes amid looming daily bombings.
The Commonwealth Government has accepted in principle an exchange of ministers with China. An announcement by the Minister for External Affairs Sir Frederick Stewart is expected in a few days. The Commonwealth awaits a communication from the Chungking authorities.
Secretary of State Cordell Hull hosted a luncheon in Washington for Australian Prime Minister Menzies. Talks between Hull and Menzies focused on issues benefiting their nations. Attendees included Australian Minister Casey and Secretary of State Sumner Welles, with other foreign affairs officials present.
