A damaged OCR fragment describes Alan Shepard aboard a Mercury mission with a launch and space ascent. It notes the cap ture from another teleopsr, a 115 mile height, and a highly successful attempt to reach space.
A 100 mph cyclone flattened towns in East Pakistan, killing about 22 and leaving 3 000 homes collapsed. Offshore islands Matiya and Ramgati were struck hard with over 12 000 dead in October’s cyclone. Three steamboats reportedly sank. exact on board numbers unknown. Governor Azad Khan’s official residence was destroyed during a relief briefing. Widespread mud-dwelling destruction in Dhaka suburbs and uprooted trees were reported as communications fell away. Hardest-hit districts included Chittagong, Noakhali, Khulna, Faridpur, and Mymensingh.
Indications point to multiple Civil Rights bills still awaiting fate in the Senate this week after a marathon filibuster by southern senators last year. The measures aim to desegregate public schools, make the Civil Rights Commission permanent, provide remedies against discrimination in business and unions, remove poll taxes and literacy tests for federal voters, and empower the Attorney General to sue over discrimination.
