Conciliation and Arbitration Commissioner G A Findlay granted 10 per cent margins increases in most ACT awards and determinations. He noted the prior metal industry increase in April was due to national economic factors and not specific to the metal sector.
The commission yesterday confirmed a rise in margins for workers in the signage related and transport sectors amid debate over extending the 6.05 percent price index based increase to metal trades and other industries. Employers argued against universal application while unions pressed for broader coverage and alignment with Canberra transport wages. The decision includes several trades with raises pending for shop staff and hospitality roles.
The City Coroner heard differing views on the condition of Dr Gilbert Stanley Boyle and Mrs Margaret Clive Chandler before their deaths on New Year’s Day. Four witnesses gave varied accounts of their last meeting with Dr Boyle and Mrs Chandler. The bodies were found on Lane Cove River bank a few hours after they left the Purey with minutes of exalt Oliver.

Judgment was reserved by Mr Justice Dunphy on a defamation claim by Goodwins (Sydney) Pty. Ltd. against The Federal Capital Press of Australia Pty. Ltd. owners of The Canberra Times. The case centers on articles published on October 4 1962 alleging false advertising and future false advertising by the plaintiffs.
