The National Capital Development Commission says Canberra will reach 100000 residents in 1969, five years earlier than prior estimates. It released a revised 1959-64 planning report to accommodate the unexpected population rise and adjust outer planning accordingly.
The commission outlines population targets and growth for Woden and satellite districts. It notes 60,000 people in Woden valley with 15 services and government offices, plus new suburbs, arterial links to Deakin and Kingston, and planned civic buildings including a new ACT Supreme Court and Police Station in Civic Centre.
Mr KW Arscott and Mr Gunnor welcomed Sir Dallas Brooks as Canberra hosts the opening of the Commonwealth YMCA recreation centre.
