War news from Warsaw reports the Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Army has been invited to visit Poland for high level staff talks on security and cooperation amid rising tensions.
In the House of Commons the Prime Minister introduced a Military Training Bill for conscription and the War Minister brought a Reserve and Auxiliary Forces Bill to enable call up of reserve and auxiliary forces. The National Council of Labour met to oppose conscription, while estimates put the cost at £30 million over two years with £25 million annual maintenance. Lord Chatfield said Britain could field 1,000,000 defenders without reserves.
Three prominent Nazis including O G Karlowa and E P Himmelmann, plus Fraulein Anna Wolfe, were expelled from Britain amid a month long investigation into Nazi associations. Dr Rosel, a newspaper correspondent, was also placed on a new list submitted to the German Embassy.
In the House of Commons Prime Minister Chamberlain said negotiations with Soviet Russia are proceeding. Foreign Secretary Halifax met the Soviet Ambassador Maisky on Saturday after his return. Chamberlain noted a statement is not yet possible, while confirming receipt of proposals and ongoing discussions with other governments to ensure despatch.
In Jerusalem two Arab brothers were sentenced to death for the April 19 murder of a British constable. Across Palestine April violence left five Britons dead and 13 Arabs killed as 13 injured, with a West Yorkshire raid uncovering 47 rifles and 1,100 rounds at Beit Rima. A German radio broadcast spread false atrocity stories about troops.
An earthquake in Akata, near Tokyo, killed four and injured five with three missing. The village of Aikawa was annihilated, and final death toll remains unknown as rescue efforts continue.
In Parliament Prime Minister Chamberlain said King George signed credentials for Britain’s new ambassador to Italy on March 28. Italy would accept the credentials. Foreign officials would not confirm a withdrawal of recognition from Albanian ministers in London or closure of the British legation in Durazzo, noting the questions were under review.
General members observed a full dress anti aircraft test at Gibraltar with participation from army units ambulances fire volunteers and other support teams in a coordinated drill aimed at readiness and coordination.
