Scientists simulate floods in giant stormwater tank
Two London researchers O Donnell and Hall at Imperial College win a grant of over £75,000 to run a laboratory flood model. A 36 foot long tank with 425 nozzles imitates tropical to torrential rain over varied artificial valleys. They will record how water travels downslope to inform flood prevention across Britain and tropical regions.

Heavy Smoking Linked to Unusual Brain Waves
A VA psychiatrist Dr Barbara B Brown reports that heavy cigarette smokers show markedly different brain wave patterns on EEG compared with non smokers. At Sepulveda VA hospital in Los Angeles she notes nearly all heavy smokers exhibit a high frequency wave pattern and some show rapid jerky activity associated with alertness or disturbance. The VA calls the pattern unnamed and suggests smoking may become a tranquilizing habit for some individuals.
