Armstrong, in Senate since 1938, exits ALP contest after final counts Fitz Gerald 109 Murphy 97 McClelland 86 Armstrong 71.
London dispatch reports Prince Philip has taken to cooking his own breakfast. A footman delivers the Queen’s breakfast prepared in the palace, while the Duke uses an electric frying pan at his table to cook his own meal.
Vancouver reports that Sir Douglas Copland leading the Australian trade mission urges closer Commonwealth links with Canada. He says two-way trade should grow beyond deficits, with Canada buying more woollen goods and sugar as Australia promotes vigorous selling. The mission visits Winnipeg Toronto Montreal and Ottawa over six weeks.
