A heavy earthquake struck Southern California near the Gulf of California, causing long lasting but non severe shaking in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. The event resembled the 1933 quake in duration though not in intensity.
Imperial flying boat Capricarus on maiden voyage from Southampton to Egypt crashes in snow near Garoux 38 miles north of Lyana. Four crew members die including Captain Paterson and steward Jeffcoate. passenger Miss B M Coaten dies later in hospital. Wireless operator J Cooper survives, reports weather and ice caused the accident. Search parties recover bodies and a makeshift chapel is used for the dead.
In Vatican City on Friday German diplomats did not attend the Mary Thursday Mass where other diplomats were present. NT de Dodeved said their absence reflected German resentment of the Pope's encyclical Laet Wank.
