A storeroom owned by Mr J. Watt of Amalie was destroyed by fire early today. Canberra Fire Brigade arrived at 4.19 am, found premises well alight, and focused on saving Barney’s garage nearby. About a dozen items and four yards of oil and flammable materials were saved. Witt had held the premises for many years since Carltores Tyre and Rubber ground was gutted about two years ago.

Timber Yard Fire in Melbourne Causes £100000 Damage
A blaze at a timber yard on Hoddle Street Collingwood Melbourne yesterday afternoon caused about £100000 in damage and threatened Victoria station. Fire brigades from Eastern Hill Hoddle Street North Fitzroy Kew and Carlton fought the flames for almost an hour. Foreman R Shelby said about 250000 super feet of Canadian United States and Sarawak timber used for home building were destroyed making replacement nearly impossible.
