Reports from competent observers suggest Japan contemplates a land expedition to isolate Chungking by moving from Thailand toward Burma. The strategy would avoid sea risks and secure a reliable supply route, possibly as payment for territorial gains and as retaliation against British forces on Thailand's southern border.

The National Service Bill grants power to call up men for civil defence for two years with penalties for noncompliance. With firemen pulled from the army, the government seeks volunteers, extending compulsory powers during air raids. Those called up may serve anywhere in the United Kingdom and receive a weekly subsistence allowance up to 24/8. A regional and national mobile reserve may be formed for rapid raid transfers, and the Civil Defence Pools total 1,250,000 with 300,000 full time. The Home Secretary notes full time service would require around one million men to sustain efficient fire watcher and civil defence operations.
Naval experts in the House say the next five battleships under the five ocean fleet will be 60 000 to 65 000 ton dreadnoughts the largest in the world. They will be 58 000 treaty ton class but fully armed displace about 65 000 tons. Seven battleships were contracted in September, and the Senate approved a 3 446 000 000 naval bill.

A German dive bomber was destroyed this afternoon by HM drifter Yung Mun and the yacht Chico. The bomber pressed dive attacks on vessels but was brought under fire and disintegrated near the Yung Mun. No casualties or major damage occurred to the Yung Mun or Chico, apart from the loss of the drifter's mizzen mast.
The Evening Sun says Fort George officers admit prolonged and skillful sabotage at the fort. Barracks and the telephone system suffered, along with electric power lines, with evidence spanning several months and definite photographic proof.
