MELBOURNE Sunday The Hospital Benefits Association reform group wants medical funds barred from giving evidence at the inquiry into doctors fees. Spokesman Mr L B Barker said funds should be barred until they prove they are not controlled by doctors or others with vested interests. The group will send reviews to Mr Justice Kerr who is presiding. Barker said 30 NSW funds were invited to submit, many reportedly controlled by medical and hospital administrators. The HBA executive has 11 members with only one whose sole interest is the contributor. Dr W Athensson of Campbell will submit that fees be paid by service rendered. Industrial advocate Mr Raymond O'Dea for Dr Atkinson argued some doctor activities are worth more than others and proposed a four level fee scale. O'Dea added the case would be a work value argument for general practitioners. Submissions are due by April 6 with hearings resuming April 10 to decide representation and oral evidence. AO Atkinson of the ACT branch AMA is submitting privately.
The Department of the Interior will operate an emergency Canberra bus timetable from this morning. Riders who count on the bus to reach work should leave home 10 to 15 minutes earlier than usual today and remain early each morning this week until normal services resume. The measure follows the Transport Workers Union vote to limit Canberra buses to 25 mph, rendering the existing timetable inoperative after a bus driver was hooked for a likely incident.
Under section 145 of the Motor Traffic Ordinance the weekday half hourly service would be replaced by an hourly schedule in the emergency timetable. Buses would run no faster than 25 miles per hour to maintain a timetable. All school services would operate but may face delays. The department believes the community would be less inconvenienced by a reduced line than current timetables.
