Severe Cyclone Ravages North Queensland Coast

A brutal cyclone off Cairns causes heavy loss of life at sea and on land. The lugger Mildred Ovitt with 10 dead is a key wreck reported near Schnapper Island. A Japanese-flagged vessel limped into Douglas Harbour after capsizing the Wippi. 20 crew reportedly drowned. Seventeen survivors from Mildred Ovitt were rescued by a pilot and survived on bananas and pumpkins. Grave fears mount for other fishing and pearling craft as ships and crews remain unaccounted for aloft. The death toll is unknown but feared to rise past 50. Further sightings include Trinity and other vessels, with several launches reportedly missing or at risk.
