Thousands greet the Queen as she lands at Fairbairn Base and visits the Australian War Memorial. Police report traffic jams. crowds cheer at the Stone of Remembrance while a four year old boy presents yellow pansies. The couple meet officials including the Governor General and Prime Minister Fraser and dine at the hotel before continuing the tour.
Reuters report notes two killed and more than 150 injured in clashes in Karachi during Pakistan’s election. Observers warned martial law might be imposed as unrest spread in the former capital. Page 5.
A large crowd including about 100 children from Charnwood Primary School gathered outside Government House to catch a glimpse of the Queen and Prince Philip. Governor-General Sir John Kerr and Lady Kerr greeted the royal party, who then met officials and media representatives before dining with Prime Minister Fraser at The Lodge. The day included a Privy Council meeting and a reception at Parliament House with various officials and their spouses, ending with a parade of events through the afternoon.
Fred Land secretary of Queanbeyan Leagues Club presented plans for a 600 seat assembly hall and gambling casino to the ACT gambling inquiry. He insisted licensed casinos would serve all social levels, citing Las Vegas and European models while stressing a broad clientele openness. Bill O Mara proposed government retention to educate patrons on protection against cheating.
A Canberra submission from Mr Land argued for a licensed casino in the ACT with a temporary family base and one regulated venue. He said Queanbeyan and Canberra could support only one casino and proposed a project including a conference centre shopping facility and open-air plaza.
