Nicholls denies killing woman in Canberra hotel case

Daniel Norris Nicholls, a Mulwala House cook charged with murdering a Canberra hotel receptionist, testified in the Supreme Court that he did not inflict the fatal wounds and that his only offense was stealing money from the victim after a 14 hour statement.

Suspect in Fatal Stabbing at Gerrison Gardens in Reid

Nicholls, charged with murdering 28 year old Beverley Irving Keys at Gerrison Gardens, Reid, on September 23, after she was found with head injuries in bed. He broke down in court, claiming innocence, and described a night of petty theft and pursuit of funds including taking a transistor radio from a house, then hiding it.

Pay Envelope Theft Recited in Nighttime Break-In Tale

Nicholls described sneaking into a residence at about 2 a.m. taking pay envelopes and money totaling about £19 plus small sums, tearing and discarding the envelopes in a drain, then returning to bed without remorse. He claimed no attack on the girl and no prior charges of violence.

Parkes Way Completion Ties Suburbs to City Center

Development Commissioner J. W. Overall announced the successful bidder Messrs. Rachel Bros. of Melbourne for the western Parkes Way section. The project will connect with the eastern segment, speed traffic between the south-eastern suburbs and the city and link the Russell Offices with northern districts. A new road point at Anzac Park and a traffic interchange at Coranderra Street will ease northern-suburb entry. Completion is expected within 12 months.

British Note Sets Stage For Geneva Talks In Moscow

The British note released by the Foreign Office confirms that Geneva Conference will open at Foreign Minister level next week. Memorial raid boat Krait eyed for Canberra display

In British North Borneo Governor Sir William Goode said BN B would contribute to the cost of the wartime raider Krait for the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Krait helped in a 1940 Singapore raid. Owner R C Barrett values the vessel at about £5000 and resists parting with it. Australian officer John Warne says talks with the Australian Commando Association aim to cover half the cost and seek BN's help for the rest.
