Commonwealth trade ministers will meet in London in May before the GATT conference in Geneva from May 16 to 21. This first major international trade conference follows the collapse of Britain’s bid to join the Common Market.
The preparatory committee for a proposed United Nations conference on trade and development will discuss after the conference. Mr McEwen said the GATT Ministers conference aims to set up international tariff and trade negotiations for 1963 and 1964. He noted U S powers under the Trade Expansion Act, though some powers are suspended by Britain's negotiation collapse with the Common Market. Australia seeks better prices for primary products and aims to boost opportunities for raw materials and agriculture in Asia Africa and South America, while promoting stability in developing country trade. In Hong Kong the Australian food and wine festival drew heavy retailer praise and strong demand, with stores reporting sellouts and queues for Australian goods. The festival runs through next Saturday and is backed by the Department of Trade and exporters and importers.
The new Monaro Mall opens in Civic Centre on Wednesday. A seven page builders supplement focused on behind the scenes of the project is published today on pages 9 to 15. Tomorrow a 32 page supplement will introduce the traders of the Mall.
