Russians in uniform join demonstrators outside the United Nations headquarters in New York to protest Soviet actions. Police and crowd tensions rise as stones and petrol bombs are thrown while the U S minister warns for caution.
A catastrophic crash near midstream under the Manhattan Bridge set ships ablaze on the East River. Fire and rescue crews fought flames for hours as crews from Empress Bay and Nobrossis were pulled from the water. About 40 crew members were unaccounted for amid hazardous fuel spills and wreckage as authorities searched for possible bodies.
Local officials indicated repairs to playground equipment in Hacht Gardens would be completed in coming weeks. A new parks official noted possible layout changes and temporary relocation of some equipment during work.
Sir Lawrence Wackett, head of Commonwealth Aircraft Corp, said Australia could manufacture Northrop NA5GE supersonic twinjet fighter at about 1000.900 each if production spans 100 units. He suggested CAC could build the jet for coast savings versus a rival Avon Lake design.
Aboard the Kosciusko Thredbo Limited lift chairman Me A T Reid and Transfield Pty Limited joint managing director Mr F Bulgano arrived at the top station for the first run since completion. President Chamoun said Lebanon would seek military aid under the UN Charter to counter rebel forces, stressing that the pro West government would not request intervention from Syria. The shelling claim by Chamoun and Syria was reported amid regional tensions.

The Lebanese Premier Mir Sami Solh said the government asked United Nations Secretary General Hammarskjold to dispatch emergency force to seal Lebanon's frontiers with Syria, amid regional crisis and the Republic of Lebanon's national security concerns.
An eleventh hour decision to grant the Hursey family leave from duties until Monday week averted a port of Hobart crisis. Hobart representative W Weaver granted the leave minutes before the Hobart Trades Hall Council debated the water level ban. The disputes committee had planned to declare the port closed tomorrow morning and continue the ban on the Hurseys. Senator Poke scheduled to attend the ACTU Emergency Committee meeting in Melbourne to discuss the dispute. The Hurseys reportedly agreed to appear on a Sydney television program while they head to Adelaide for a family engagement.
A meeting of 38 representatives from Canberra retail trade agreed to extend Friday hours with shops open 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm and some smaller traders to 7:00 pm. A Canberra City Traders Association is being formed. a July 8 meeting will decide on the constitution and elect officers.
The disfiguring scar on Black Mountain resulting from past quarrying will be core cooled by a Department of the Interior advised program. The Tourist Bureau Advisory Board is informed that flat planting will begin there as soon as possible.
