Wool marketing reform backed by acquisition plan

Federal Cabinet signaled in principle support for a wool clip acquisition scheme as part of a single industry body. Country Party leader Mr Anthony, addressing the Cootamundra conference, said decisions on reserve price and floor price would follow guidelines. He noted the Wood Commission had steadied stocks at about 930,000 bales, with expected year-end under 100,000. The commission boosted growers by an estimated $100 million, and deficiency payments would total just over 50 million this year.

Cabinet says wool marketing level reached

The Assistant Minister for Primary Industry Mr King told a Dunolly Country Party meeting that constitutionally the Government had gone as far as possible with wool marketing. He noted AWIC proposals largely matched Government policy, with some finer points to be resolved. He highlighted the continuation of the 3c a pound deficiency payment for 12 more months as an achievement.

Body lacking in power growers oppose wool plan

Melbourne reports Wool grower leaders attack the Federal Cabinet plan for future marketing of the Australian clip. They support amalgamation to form the Australian Wool Marketing Corporation but challenge its limited powers and the 36c deficiency price. They cite ignored studies and insist stockholding and pricing policy must be government consulted. Prices in Adelaide Brisbane and Geelong fell over three days as the market slumped.

Cabinet rejects wool industry reform claim sparks disappointment

Labor figure Mr Grasshy told a Berwick meeting in Victoria supporting Holt candidate Max Oldmeadow that the Federal Cabinet’s decision not to proceed with basic wool reforms was a bigger retreat than forecast, described as a surrender to sectional pressure. A Canberra-issued statement echoed the criticism.

Wool Marketing Corporation projected to start exams by mid next year

Ministers in Canberra expect the new Wool Marketing Corporation to be formed by year end and to begin examining wool acquisition immediately, reporting to the government by mid next year. The plan to merge the Wool Board and Wool Commission aims for acceptance across parties, but constitutional hurdles require Commonwealth-State agreement and complementary legislation before funding.
