Differences to Reconcile on Common Market Talks

In Washington President Kennedy and Prime Minister Menzies agreed to pursue reconciliation of trade differences on the Common Market issue. The communique said Britain’s entry must not be blocked by Commonwealth conditions, a stance Menzies described as a grave misfortune if unacceptable to Commonwealth nations.

Communiqué on Atlantic leaders' views on Britain joining Common Market

Leaders from the United States and Australia endorse practical trade talks with Britain about entry to the European Community and stress unity of Europe as a stabilizing force for the Free World. Prime Minister Menzies Begins Overseas Tour Schedule

The Prime Minister plans a long overseas trip starting in the United States, with stops in Sydney and Canberra. He will brief on the tour in Canberra Sunday, then attend the Premiers Conference, Loan Council, and Cabinet talks on the 1962 43 Budget, before Common Market discussions and a Britain Commonwealth meeting.

Mystery sky flash over Canberra alarms residents

Hundreds in Canberra reported a bright orange sky flash lasting four to five seconds near 6 16 pm. Authorities found no aircraft in the area and the origin remains uncertain with speculation tied to a failed U S high altitude test. In other news a three year old boy was attacked by a dog at Lyneham flats needing 20 stitches but expected to recover without facial scarring. The owner and dog registration issues are under police and Interior Department review with many Alsatians unregistered in a recent campaign.

Waterside Stoppage Loss in Sydney Report

Unauthorised stoppages on the Australian waterfront last month cost 125,682 man hours, a sharp rise from the prior quarters. The loss stems from waterside workers opposing long service leave penalties, nearly triple the period's earlier totals, with May’s hours exceeding the three year May average.

Thor rocket nuclear test ends in failure over Pacific

The Thor intermediate missile carrying a high altitude nuclear device was destroyed within two minutes after launch from Johnston Island due to a malfunction. Debris fell into the open sea within a safety area and no radioactive danger reached the ocean or ground.

Two Teenagers Captured After Stolen Car Spree

Two 15 and 16 year old boys escaped from Royal Park Boys Home on Monday and began a car theft spree across Melbourne Sydney and Goulburn. One youth was tied to a semi trailer and freed himself after being dragged at high speed while the other fled through bushland. Police intercepted near Collector and Sutton bringing the chase to an end. Both youths were charged in Goulburn Children's Court yesterday.

Paddington Stabbing Hoax Exposed as Self-Inflicted

In Sydney Paddington a man, Ernest Winkler 27, confessed to faking a stabbing near his wife to gain sympathy. Police led by Supt Walden said no charges will be laid as no one else was implicated. The so called mutilation murderer has killed three men in the past year.
