A United Nations inquiry concludes the Hungarian revolt of 1956 was spontaneous and driven by students workers soldiers and intellectuals. The report says Soviet intervention preceded and shaped events amid a police terror network and Soviet influence across Hungarian society.
The account says October 23 demonstrations began peaceful with no proof of force plans. It blames AVH action for turning the crowd hostile when Soviet troops appeared as enemies in combat. Nagy denies inviting Soviet intervention and the committee cites no clear invitation or its conditions. Report notes Russians shot civilians, wrecked ambulances, and removed wounded from hospitals.
The report lauded by Minister for External Affairs Casey as a glowing record of Hungarian heroism and a stark indictment of Communist rule. Casey urged a world wide push to reconvene the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the report, arguing it reveals Soviet treachery and justifies international concern over intervention in internal affairs.
Albert Weatherall, a labourer of Bank Street Versumta, was imprisoned yesterday after sentencing for illegal use. The sentences are to run concurrently. Prosecution asked Fr Kanne SM to determine the terms.
Dr. R. D. Defries of Connaught Laboratories in Toronto announced a new quadruple polio vaccine is being tested. The formulation combines the Salk polio vaccine with three other components to provide protection against additional diseases.

In thick fog a collision between an American freighter and a Greek freighter near Panama and the Orkney Islands caused a fire and sinking. Eleven seamen died, 46 survived, 18 seriously injured, with a timber freighter also reported on fire offshore.
