Visitors to the ACT yesterday showed interest in the Canberra Tourist Bureau display illustrating new bus routes to be introduced by the Transport Section shortly.
In Moscow Khrushchev criticized Western plans for Berlin as groundless and urged a peace treaty with Germany. He said talks should be with a German government or a representative body and warned that occupation remnants would end if a treaty with the German Democratic Republic is signed. He suggested a summit could be possible if ministers fail to agree.
London juror Mrs Jean Friend 49 Regent's Park denies winking at Liberace as she returned to court after the Libel award. A Daily Telegraph report says she told Mr Justice Salmon she did not wink or make any motion toward the defendant. The case awarded 46000 pounds against the Daily Mirror.
Helicopter valued at 23000 pounds sank seconds after water impact during a naval exercise with the frigate HMAS Gascoyne. Pilot Peter Stanwix 26 of Bankstown escaped with life after ignition trouble forced an attempted water landing. Recovery attempts planned Monday by Civil Aviation and Navy.
Sydney unions protested Durban police actions. The Federal office of the BWAU sent a cable to the South African Prime Minister alleging brutality and urging immediate end to the use of troopers and arms. The message was on behalf of 40 000 BWIU members and echoed by other unions including the Federated Miscellaneous Worker Union and the Sheet Metal Workers Union.
In Durban the Cato Manor and Chesterville townships faced widespread violence as thousands of Africans clashed with police. Rioters attacked government offices, schools, and vehicles while white residents evacuated. police used firearms and fixed bayonets to restore order amid reports of deaths and many injuries.
Mr Louw told the Senate the campaign was instigated by W A Phillips a former Natal lecturer who claimed Boydell biased and Haydell's lectures lacked truth. He said newspapers and the Council of Churches in Australia followed up the matter. He asserted the ban came from NSW Government not Central Australia.
