Egypt says U S rejected secret talks on Lebanon crisis

The report claims Colonel Nasser and the U.S. ambassador discussed a joint Egyptian American plan to settle the Lebanese crisis. Rocket fails in test at Woomera

A Sky Skylark rocket weighing one ton exploded and crashed two miles from the main observation building at Woomera. The second rocket was reportedly fired successfully, with further tests planned as part of the International Geophysical Year experiments by UK universities.

Canberra civil airport remained closed until midday due to heavy fog. A TA A Viscount and Anselt aircraft could not use the strip. the airport reopened in the afternoon and normal flight operations resumed. Frank Maituto of Yarralumla fracture left arm after slipping on an icy Commonwealth Bridge. he was treated at Canberra Community Hospital. Waste sand was spread on the bridge to reduce further accidents.

Bread Price Reduced in Canberra and New South Wales

Bread will cost 1d less per 2 lb loaf in Canberra from next Monday after a Canberra bakers’ meeting approved the cut. From today, NSW loaves drop by 1d per 2 lb loaf. The reductions follow a statement by NSW Minister for Labour Mr. Maloney that flour selling prices justified the cut.

Canberra trading hours extended for Friday and Saturday

The Minister for the Interior Mr Fairhall announced extended trading hours continue Friday night and Saturday to noon with weekday closings after 6 pm. He directed minor amendments to the Trading Hours Ordinance and met with Canberra Chamber of Commerce. Canberra shopkeepers plan a deputation to the Minister for the Interior to oppose late Friday night trading despite Mr. Walthall accepting the Joint Parliamentary Committee's recommendations. A secret ballot showed 71 percent favor abolition. 29 percent favored retention. The meeting urged omitting late shopping from the Trad ing Hours Ordinance to set maximum permissible hours and encourage voluntary closings, with enforcement via majority practice and respect for industrial award hours.
