More than 10,000 people crowded the snowfields over the weekend causing accommodation chaos and creating a record attendance figure for the Queen's Birthday holiday.
Two young men, Mirko Novae aged 20 of Watson and Joseph Sabol aged 19 of Watson, were killed early yesterday when their car hit a bridge on Barton Highway near Hall. Police were still making enquiries with no further particulars available.
About 400 key operators in all NSW power stations stopped work at 11pm, with stoppages planned at Munmorah, Wangi, Wales Point, Snowy Mountains, Wallerawang and Sydney powerhouses Bunnerong White Bay and Pyrmont. Essential services will be powered, hospitals included. A compulsory conference, presided by Conciliation Commissioner Frank Dunn, directed unions not to strike. A resumption could follow Tuesday talks at Ram, with a 35 hour week and extra annual leave demanded by strikers. He urged unity and discussed security links around the Indian Ocean, future defence cooperation, and plans to expand Malaysia's armed forces with help from Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India. He also announced civil service reforms to combat corruption and stated border security prevented further border incursions by suspected terrorists.
Subic Bay Philippines Sunday AAP Reuters report says Lieutenant James Hopson testified he could not recall seeing a special handbook listing precautions to avoid a collision during a SEATO exercise. The six man board investigated the pre dawn crash between HMAS Melbourne and USS Evans, 450 miles south west.
The board heard Evans and other screen ships prepare for SEATO exercise Sea Spirit. Captain Stevenson cited six cautions including strict care, close-quarters drills, adherence to plane-guard procedures, full-navigation lights during danger, clear signaling of course, and pre-exercise briefings with screening officers to avoid Melbourne during maneuvers. Lieutenant Hopson discussed watch duties with Lieutenant Ramsey and noted prior review of operational orders and maritime procedures. Two officers warned.
A 44 month old child drowned and nine people injured when the 45 ft cruiser Siva blew apart in Middle Harbour due to a leaking fuel tank. The baby, asleep, perished while the parents Mr and Mrs Denis Power of Cremorne were among those hospitalised with injuries. Police divers recovered the infant from wreckage. others injured include Michael Smee 13 of Mosman, Mr Riper Cremorne, Mr Friedman Elizabeth Bay, and Mrs Forman Neutral Bay with various fractures or wounds. Four Canberra men were charged with driving under the influence after Breathalyzer tests by Queanbeyan Police over the weekend, with a peak reading of 0.235. Five more Queanbeyan men faced charges as the Breathalyzer remains in operation for the long weekend and may be used permanently depending on results.
