Canberra records coldest morning of year with frost

Canberra woke to a record cold morning with frosty grass and a screen reading of 20.6 degrees and 13.8 on the grass. The city fretted about ice coated taps and pools as frost persisted into near noon and the Weather Bureau forecast further chill the following day.

Motion to Levy A. L. P. Members Salaries Blocked

In Sydney the NSW ALP conference balked a motion to cut Labour MPs' salaries by two and a half percent. The proposal aimed to fund national party needs with roughly 300 pounds a year per member. The motion was referred to the incoming executive after protests at the Town Hall.

Glider Pilot Injured In Mishap Near Maitland

Queen's Birthday road toll hits 35 across Australia

Thirty five people were killed in road accidents during the Queen's Birthday weekend with New South Wales suffering the heaviest toll at twenty. Victoria reported five deaths, South Australia four, Queensland three, Western Australia two, and Tasmania one. Officials called it the worst toll on record and warned more deaths may occur as travellers return home. In Victoria a reported drop in fatalities was credited to a police blitz. A 12 year old died in a Bendigo area crash near Maldon. a man died in Nabiac, New South Wales.

Body Of Missing Man Found Near Urila Station

The three day search for Kevin Roy Flint 44 missing from Urila Station near Burra Queanbeyan district ended with his body found on a hilltop about half a mile from the homestead. Police believe he died of a heart seizure likely two days earlier and a loaded .22 rifle lay beside him. A post mortem will be carried out at Queanbeyan.
