Tasmanian Treasurer Dr Turnbull will be prosecuted on matters relating to bribery allegations announced by Attorney General Mr Fagan. The case to be heard in Hobart Sessions, with possible transfer to the Criminal Court, as details and charges are prepared by the Solicitor General.
Two high ranking ACT delegates to the interstate executive conference in Brisbane were admitted to hospital. My BLE Chamberlain, president of the Federal Executive of the Australian Labour Party, and J. D. Kenny MLC, vice president of the ACTU and NSW Trades Hall assistant secretary, suffered health issues during the day. Kenny had a light heart attack at the executive session and was expected to return to Sydney. Chamberlain later reported acute pains.
British journalist Malcolm Muggeridge, after a visit to Australia, described Hongkong as a doomed colony and called it the last battle before a retreat into Communist China. He portrayed Hongkong as a gateway for travelers into China and noted lingering colonial symbols amid rising revolutionary sentiment.
In Lisbon Rear Admiral Tomas won the Portuguese presidency yesterday as results came in. Minister Dr. J. Tygo promised to unveil further results noting Tomas secured a large majority.

The executive filed a motion to form a national labour movement aimed at full employment. A referendum will be held in Melbourne on July 2 to convey the Commonwealth’s stance. Monis, president of the Australian Trades Union, announced a review of employment in each state.
In Sydney a proposal urged Australia to make part of its London fund available to New Zealand for loans. Australian Exporters Federation president Sparks and finance official Nébmeyer noted interest in underwriting a loan of 20 to 30 million pounds to New Zealand. Such a move could balance New Zealand’s unfavorable balance with Britain and Australia.
India plans to approach the British government and the City of London for a long term loan as part of a move to address a continuing economic crisis. The government aims to secure support ahead of a broader meeting on economic distress.
Police and fire crews battled a three level blaze that swept the Plaza Hotel near Wynyard Station in the early hours. Firefighters rescued occupants, one man sustained a bruised hip and was treated at St. Vincent’s Hospital. the fire started in a railway storeroom beneath the ramp.
Paris reports signs of a rift between General de Gaulle and Algerian leaders over the May 1 Movement, with factions in the Algerian Provisional Safety Committee blamed. The Daily Mail says de Gaulle and Salan clashed over cabinet choices and preparations for a new constitution and potential referendum.
