The Prime Minister urged Australians to discard thoughts of depression as unemployment and other difficulties were temporary. He said anti inflationary measures were temporary to curb a booming economy and would be eased as goals were achieved. He forecast years of growth and noted overseas funds remained strong despite some dislocations.
G M H General Mastors Holden Ltd announced it will sack 686 Australian plant workers including 470 in Victoria. In South Australia 203 workers will receive dismissal notices at Woodville and Elizabeth plants tomorrow morning. Company spokesman cited sales defense and credit squeeze as the retrenchment cause. Earlier in February about 2,445 Australian positions were cut.
Khrushchev greets US president Kennedy at the Russian Embassy in Vienna on the second day of meetings. Krushchev stands with Gromyko nearby as other participants remain unidentified amid a sequence of photographs on Page 3.
England won the toss and batted, Subba Row made 59 in 170 minutes with six fours before Mackay's spell, three wickets in four balls, destroyed England's middle order. Rain interruptions and Murray's 16 contributed as England slumped to 7/153. Benaud began bowling, delivering early breakthroughs.

National tin mine workers in Bolivia were reported to plan a hunger march at Catavi and Siglo Viente later today as the government proclaimed martial law and tighter controls.

Lightning struck a high tension switch at the North Ainslie zone substation causing a 20 minute power failure in northern Canberra suburbs. Electricity was cut from 4.40 to 5.18 p.m. Local crews restored supply quickly with no injuries reported.
The Select Parliamentary Committee on aborigines voting rights begins hearings next Thursday and Friday at Brisbane City Hall. The inquiry aims to examine eligibility and access issues affecting Aboriginal voters with officials and witnesses scheduled in the city.
