Treasurer Holt announced Royal as the principal unit of Australia's new decimal currency after Cabinet deliberations. Opposition Leader Calwell pledged to change the name to Australian dollar if Labour wins office.
Mt Holt reports Cabinet favored Royal as the new currency name with R as its symbol. Royal would replace the 10 shilling unit, plan to introduce in February 1966 with 100 cents per Royal and the old pound’s value linked to 1 Royal equals 12d. The name aims to honor the Crown and preserve historical coinage links.
Mr Holt explained the Royal will be a bank note and outlined six coinage units. Crown equals 50 cents or 5 shillings, Florin 20 cents, Shilling 10 cents, Five cents, Two cents, and One cent with values given in pence.
Mr Holt outlined a thorough government review of potential names for a new Australian currency unit. Hundreds of suggestions from history geography and notable figures were evaluated but rejected for lack of dignity ease of pronunciation brevity and suitability for contraction. The penny and halfpenny were also discarded to avoid value confusion during a two year currency transition.
