After a lengthy 44 day hearing the Arbitration Court set a 15 shilling basic weekly wage increase. Judges split on automatic quarterly adjustments with Justice Foster finally concurring. The decision impacts about two million workers across major cities and industries.
Mr H E Curan secretary of the Asut Trades and Labour Council says the December basic wage should be about £14 2s and a further rise next quarter would leave workers £4 a week worse off under the new basic wage of £73 18s. He links the Arbitration Commission decision to lost purchasing power and calls for strict price control.
Western officials said in the last 48 hours secret talks moved to substance as Russia dropped propaganda. The Big Four discussed possibly trimming the West Berlin garrison by up to a third if access to the city is guaranteed. A West East commission idea emerged while major gaps remained on Soviet token forces in West Berlin.
