Australia Eases Import Controls To Free Trade Area

The Government will lift import licensing for about 40 percent of Australian goods as a move toward a near free world trade area. American and other suppliers will be easier to access, with exceptions for luxury items such as certain American cars. The policy, to start next Monday, aims to boost manufactur ers access to cheap world markets and is tied to auspicious trade forecasts for 1957 58. Ministers reserve the right to tighten imports if the trade position worsens.

Fomenko Arrives at Horn Island After Canoe Journey

Michael Fomenko reached Horn Island three miles east of Thursday Island and plans to visit Thursday Island for supplies before continuing 100 miles across the Torres Strait to New Guinea. He is living with about 100 natives at a southern tip settlement and expressed regret for the fuss caused by his voyage.
