The government announced higher patient contributions for pharmaceutical benefits prescriptions effective September 1. The rise from 50c to $1.50 applies to general benefits with backdated increases to July 1, 1971, and would cost £XX million in the current financial year.
A man and a woman, both 35, died when a giant sandstone boulder cave‑in crushed them in a Melbourne mine. Rescue workers freed two other men who were partially buried as authorities investigated the accident.
In Boston a 49 year old woman Diana Hryani fell five stories with her god daughter from an iron balcony when it collapsed. The child Tiare Tomes age 2 survived after rescue and was treated for cardiac arrest though later reported in fair condition. Fireman Robert ONeill mentored the rescue from the roof and saved the girl while the mother was at work. The mother’s caregiver died of multiple injuries at Massachusetts General Hospital about two hours after the fall.
Australia moves toward resumption of normal mail service after three hours of talks at the Australian Council of Trade Unions. ACTU president Hawke said a basis for lifting work bans was obtained and a hearing on a $4 pay claim was agreed for Monday. Backlog estimated at 11 million items expected to clear by mid next week.
Houston report says Apollo astronauts and scientists aboard the mission detected an entirely new object outside Earth’s solar system with an extremely hot, compact plasma appearance possibly resembling a sun. Dr Stuart Bowyer of UC Berkeley notes the origin is unknown as splashdown nears in the Pacific near Hawaii.
London. Unemployment in Britain topped the million mark for July, 4.7 percent of the working population. Minister Michael Foot warned inflation and the world economy must improve for figures to fall. July's rise of 218 thousand is the largest monthly increase on record, driven by school leavers and adult students joining the register.
Dame Ivy Wedgewood, 71, dies at her Toorak home. A Liberal pioneer, she helped found the party in 1944, became Victoria’s first woman senator in 1949, and served on key committees including acting chairman of committees in 1966. She chaired the Medical and Hospital Costs Committee and was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1967. She urged a women’s workforce bureau, leading to government action.
Sole Brothers Circus pressed for art status at the Industries Assistance Commission inquiry into performing arts grants. Attorney E O Dwyer called the circus a cultural art form while Arts Council remarks on leisure activities sparked dispute.
