Investigations show that dummying at March restricted land auctions did not breach ACT law. Minister for the Interior Mr Freeth disclosed details of the dummying methods late yesterday and said the loophole would be closed to prevent future abuses of the auction system.
Mr Freeth announced investigations into alleged evasion of the restricted land auction rules. Police found two Canberra residents and a local firm organised a dummy bidding scheme at the March sale, with payments up to £90. Buyers signed declarations denying other land interests, while June auctions tightened terms to close the loophole. Further amendments to protect the system are being considered.
Sixty carpenters and labourers walked off sites after E Clementson Pty Ltd refused a weekly site allowance of 35 shillings. The dispute sparks warnings of a full scale stoppage as workers on the new hospital project strike half a day in solidarity.
