Australia plans immediate reduction in unskilled migrant intake due to unemployment. Minister Downer said migrant arrival rates would be cut from this month and two ships had already been cancelled. The annual target remains 125000 for 1961-62.

More than 260 French paratroopers swept Metz after a paratrooper and a barman were shot dead by Algerians. Police reported at least four killed, including two paratroopers, the barman, and an Algerian worker, with more than 20 wounded.

Assistant general secretary J Roach will continue to lead the union pending the vote. over 10,000 waterside workers attended the decision. The ballot rejection confirms W C Alford did not gain the post. Healy had recently defeated Alford by a wide margin in the annual ballot.
