Final Drafting Of Bank Bill To Begin Today

Acting Prime Minister Sir John Fadden announced that final drafting will begin for legislation to separate the Commonwealth Trading Bank from the Central Bank and create a separate board. The bill may transfer assets from the Commonwealth Savings Bank and related sections to the trading bank and relax reserve requirements for private banks. The move stems from long negotiations and pressure from government backbenchers wishing a fully competitive trading bank. Cabinet will not discuss the Budget until its August 6 meeting ahead of a full Parliament presentation on August 28.
