Bitter fighting marks day two of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. British forces mount a rescue for thousands of foreigners trapped amid crossfire around Nicosia as Turkish units link with paratroops north of the capital. Archbishop Makarios condemns the action.
A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra said a telegram from Cyprus reported all Australian civil police stations on the island had been abandoned but the police were safe. They were with British or United Nations camps performing escort duties and aiding civilian evacuations. Several hundred Australians are believed to be on Cyprus, with Australians advised to stay indoors. The Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister were kept informed as Australia supports UN efforts for peace. Qantas flights to Europe were disrupted due to fighting. there was no air traffic control for eastern Mediterranean routes normally managed by Turkey.
