Witter Provisional Car Trial Winner and Crowd Rush

Witter won the provisional car trial with only three points lost, as Victoria in a Volkswagen finished second and John Garard in a different model placed further back. A huge crowd welcomed the event, with radio personality Jack Davey arriving in a Chrysler as teenagers breached police lines to approach him. Two cars were withdrawn during the Brisbane to Sydney run, including a Standard Vanguard driven by J. E. Thornton and a Volkswagen driven by Hagarty. Drivers praised the trial overall though Birdsville sections drew mixed feelings, and maps issued to drivers were criticized as hopelessly unsafe. Witter’s VW sustained more damage from fans than the event itself. Mrs Brown, driving a 1927 Rolls Royce, finished fifth despite the rough Birdsville track.
