France stages nuclear arsenal display on Bastille Day
France unveiled a new addition to its nuclear forces during Bastille Day ceremonies in Paris. A 30 ton intermediate range missile with a 1900 mile range stalled on the Champs Elysees, moments before President Pompidou, amid talks with U.S. defense officials, witnessed the malfunction. France had left NATO command in 1966 to pursue an independent nuclear deterrent, with tests in the Pacific previously. The show contrasted with Napoleonic cavalry as a symbol of enduring defense strategy.
