In a submission to a Carer sub committee the RSL urged at least a £1 million uplift in War Service Homes funding to cut delays amid the housing shortage. It also proposed broad pension increases for general rate, service, widows and dependants, plus extended medical and repatriation benefits and higher funeral grants.
Rescue crews report no signs of life from miners Byrne and Delbridge after about 50 hours entombed in a shaft near the 6th Mine guiding tunnel. Three shifts of 20 men dig through sand and rubble while an air hose is threaded toward the trapped men amid ongoing fears of another rock fall.

The second wave of defence personnel transfer from Melbourne to Canberra started with nine R A A F families arriving, bringing total relocated since January to about 270. Expect nine daily moves until mid August when Army staff transfers begin, with most families reporting satisfaction with housing and smooth arrangements. Rooms were ready at Campbell O Connor Lyneham and Braddon flats as keys were handed by the Interior Department housing branch.
