Australia expressed strong reservations over Britain joining the European Common Market. Prime Minister Menzies and British Commonwealth Relations Secretary Duncan Sandys released a joint communique noting Australia cannot block the decision, as it lies with the British government alone.
Australian Ministers voiced concern that UK joining the EEC could pull Europe into broader economic and political policies, risking Australian trade. They urged direct negotiations and special trade arrangements to protect UK trade with Australia, noting potential tariff increases and loss of tariff preferences. Continuous talks with UK officials aimed to clarify implications and maintain trade flow.
Commonwealth Relations Minister Duncan Sandys said talks with Australian ministers on Britain's planned entry into the European Common Market were not tough. He told reporters before departing for Canada that the discussions were fruitful and conducted in a happy constructive atmosphere.

A young mother and a police constable rushed to save three children trapped in a blazing Milperra caravan near Liverpool. A kerosene heater exploded, burning the caravan within minutes. The mother tried to free her ten month old baby and did not know the others were inside. The victims were Robert John Onley five Susie Ann two and Rodney ten months.
New Zealand sponsored a 10 point recommendation under the Antarctic treaty to share advance expedition details among treaty powers. It urges yearly exchanges by November end and aims to prevent overlapping scientific programs and expeditions. The plan calls for reporting on all expeditions and contingents, with personnel counts and any military equipment used in Antarctica.
