The Roman Catholic Church backs closing six Goulburn Catholic schools as a six week protest over government funding to denominational schools. Cardinal Gilroy supports the action, affecting more than 2,000 pupils.
Catholic leaders threaten mass closure of Goulburn area schools as the Canberra Goulburn diocese protests state funding for church education. Cardinal Gilroy labels the move drastic while Labour refrains from policy comment amid rising Catholic political influence and a looming March election.
Parents in Goulburn voted to close all schools until the end of August in protest of government policy on private school aid. Bishop J Cullinane said locals opposed Department attitudes and met to discuss the impact on Catholic schools. Archbishop Dr EB M O'Brien sought comment.
A Labour squad of the East German People's Police raised a new barrier near the existing Berlin Wall on Bernauer Strasse last Thursday. About 30 men removed top stones from the old wall while constructing a second wall six feet behind it, as escapes to the west have occurred in this area. Cape Canaveral reports Telstar satellite performing perfectly after launch. Officials say signals are loud and clear as tests planned to link United States and Europe for live television. Telstar, 34 inches diameter with 72 faces, powered by 3600 solar cells, aims for 20 year orbit and global communications network.
More than 70 people invited for 125 Australia flying scholarships offered by the Federal Government. The scholarships provide up to £700 each to support young Australians pursuing careers as pilots in the nation’s aviation industry.
Three newborn babies were burned when a curtain fell in the Burwood and District Community Hospital nursery. A nurse saw flames from a curtain light as a smoke enveloped the infants. The three babies were reportedly only a few days old and were conveyed to the Royal Children's Hospital. The extinguisher helped quell the blaze. Their condition was listed as satisfactory late tonight.
More than 80 residents evacuated in North and South Lismore as the Richmond River flooded. Police and civil defence moved families to higher ground while supplies and shelters were organized. five inches of rain fell in three hours and several areas faced continued rising water.
