Soviet Prime Minister Krushchev said demobilisation was halted and military spending increased by nearly a third due to Western threats over Berlin and Germany. He urged Western leaders to begin discussions toward a German peace treaty.
In a Kremlin speech Krushchev calls for leaders including Kennedy and de Gaulle to pursue a German peace treaty while warning of intensified Soviet defense spending and readiness. He vows to sign a treaty with East Germany if needed and to bolster armed forces against aggressive imperialist forces.
Sir R. Benaud vented mixed disappointment at England’s bowling and Australia's collapse after a three day test loss. He insisted Australia could still win the series and dismissed plans for draws, praising the crowd for witnessing a strong cricket showcase.
A horse owned by G Lusgh of Mindarie Street Narrabundah became stuck in a cuttle grid on Tidbinhill Road near the Cotter on Saturday night. Police, forestry workers and locals used acetylene torches hacksaws and a crane to free the animal after five hours. The horse sustained minor blood loss but recovered. the grid was welded shut and traffic reopened.
