Sydney reports the Federal wage today rose by 32d for adult males and 9d for adult females. The increase affects about two million federal workers in Australia and lifts the basic wage in the six capital cities to £14/8. The new wages will add an estimated £60 million to the national wage bill.
The Conciliation and Arbitration Commission led by Sir Aida Kirby found that the basic wage for adult females rises to 75 percent of the male rate, with proportionate increases for unions and apprentices. The decision, effective with the next pay period starting on or after July, affects over two million workers under around 200 awards, with about 750,000 in NSW. The commission emphasized the wage level's impact on living standards and signaled further hearings on related leave and annual pay matters, while noting a broader economy effect.
